So i've i got a router, split my broadband connection for 2 computers... they both got signal for the first 4 days.... This morning neither was getting... I tried restarting the modem, unpluggin and pluging cables... and it was the same thing. Im able to ask this question because i've changed it back to the original pc with the broadband.... it works!... Is it the router thats messed up?? what is the best way to network 2 pc's???Splitting a broadband Connection?????
does the router have a default (0.0.0.0) route pointing to the cable modem? and do the pcs have a default route pointing to the router? you say that you have connectivity between the 2 computers, are they on different subnets? if so then they must be going through the router to reach each other, but if not, they may not have a default gw pointing to the router.
as always when troubleshooting, isolate the problem domain. so start on the router, ping from the router to the cable modem interface, then out to the internet. if that works then the problem is with your computers not understanding where to go to get to the internet - i.e. default gw or route. if you can ping the local (ethernet) interface on the cable modem but can't ping any further out to the internet then your router doesn't have a default route pointing to the cable modem interface.
just break it down into logical parts.Splitting a broadband Connection?????
It's possible both computers may have conflicting IP numbers (IE the same IP number) or somewhere you're getting blocked by a firewall. I'm using 3 computers on 1 broadband connection and the first thing I did was manually configure the IP addresses so each machine was different. An example is computer 1's IP is 192.168.1.2, 2's IP is 192.168.1.3 and 3's IP is 192.168.1.4 . You cant use 192.168.1.1 because that's being used by the ADSL modem itself. Try that and see how you go. Good luck!
I'd be willing to bet your the router fried or it came unplugged. You would be able to share folders if it was working.
ok, I was just having teh same problem. UNINSTALL the internet gateway from windows.

As someone has said previously, this is likely the router that is causing the issue. First thing, find out the IP address of the router. It'll be in the web based configuration under network somewhere. It's usually 192.168.1.1, but not always. Note this address down.
To ask this question, did you connect the b.band directly to one of the PC's? I suspect you did, therefore eliminating the router from the setup. Next, connect the 2 PC's to the router and configure their IP's for the same subnet. IE. if the router IP=192.168.1.1 then PC1's IP=192.168.1.10 and PC2's IP=192.168.1.20. Set the subnet mask on both PC's to 255.255.255.0.
Also, set the Gateway on both PC's to the IP address of the router (192.168.1.1 in this example).
Next, check if the PC's can access each other. Try opening a shared folder on one of the PC's using the other PC. If this works it tells you that data is passing through the router OK.
Next, try accessing the internet from the PC's. It should work OK.
If not, you need to go through the setup of the router very carefully. Make sure the username and password supplied by your ISP is set correctly. Also, make sure the router is set to reconnect automatically if it loses it's connection. I've seen this SO many times I've lost count.
Good luck!!
HI,
If you are using a broadband connection, it mustbe using mac address to register your pc to connect to the internet. In most of the routers there is an option to clone mac address with the pc, which is already registered %26amp; connecting to internet. Clone that mac address %26amp; then u will not face any problems. Cheers
Router is the best. You can set your router's client lease time to a longer period. Use the router CD to let your computer setup a connection for you.
a router should do the trick
it could be that the software running on the router messed up.
in that case just put if off and then on (or pull the electicity cable out). then it should work again.
