Why have my butternut squash split?

I am growing my own. They are big and have split a little whilst still on the plant. Why is this? Why have my butternut squash split?
it is partly due to the weather, you have left them too long and when it is warm and wet the plant supplies too much water to the soft skinned fruit and they split. never feed them when the fruits are large you should cut them and store them and allow them to harden off, , then they will keep for several months in a dry cool place. It is the same for plums tomatoes grapes etc. irregular watering and humid conditions cause them to split. Why have my butternut squash split?
plants have a certain amount of time before they are to large for the stem to keep supplying nourishment then they split or break off splitting in your case
You could have waited too long, had too much rain and didn't keep the squash from touching the ground.
Not time to harvest yet. The splitting is due to lack of water, and they will need some feed.
you waited too long to pick it.
because idk
