I want to buy COD 4 this weekend, but I want to know if me and three other people can play split screen off one xbox against another group of four online.Can Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare play 4-player split screen online?
It's still unknown if 2 players will for sure be able to play online splitscreen.. I wouldn't get your hopes up for 4, even though it still would be great. :D

for CoD 4: You can play 4 player spilt screen offline but not online. Online is 1 person per xbox and screen.
No, you cant. You can play 4-player split screen on local matches though.
