What causes hairs to split? how can it be prevented?

i dont straighten my hair.

however i have to be out in the sun a lot..is that whats causing it? what do i do then? What causes hairs to split? how can it be prevented?
Hair is dead to begin with, which is why it splits in time no matter what. There are things that can accelerate the breaking: heat, excessive brushing, or not using conditioner.

The ways to prevent excess breaking are as follows: get a trim every 4-6 weeks. Think of how a piece of rope unravels over time. This is like your hair. Trimming keeps the ends neat. Are you washing your hair every day? Although this sounds like a good idea, this will also cause extra breaking. Wash it every other day or every two days, depending on how dirty it gets. Condition when you wash it. Once a week, use an intensive conditioning treatment, such as 3 Minute Miracle or something that says ';deep conditioning';. Once every two weeks do a hair treatment, such as VO5 hot oil. Hot oil helps to keep the ends from fraying. Another good treatment is a Placenta wrap. You can find these at drug stores.

The sun may cause damage to your hair as well if you're out in it long enough. Did you know that the sun can bleach your hair lighter? It's a powerful thing. You can find sprays at the drug store with an SPF factor in them. You might want to condition less during the week and use the sprays instead. You do not need something with SPF necessarily. You can do a spray conditioner. These will help combat sun damage.

Hope this helped and good luck! What causes hairs to split? how can it be prevented?
Brushing your hair, Using Chemicals, and heat on your hair causes your hair to split, There is shampoo that will disguise them, But that's not recommended, as you leave split ends in your hair, the split will travel up the strand, and result in breakage...it's best to go in for a trim every 4-6 weeks(which is the only way to get rid of them completely.)
I'm not sure if sun can do it, I guess it would dry it out, so it might.

Brush from the bottom upwards, and get a trim regularly. I can never afford that though so look through every now and again with your own pair of scissors and just chop off any offending splits!!
Try cutting your hair once a month to reduce split ends, also use shampoos that will strengthen your hair :) split ends are caused by brittle hair when it is exposed too much under the sun and use too much shampoo.
